There are two ways to play and color pasta. you can color it raw straight from the box, or you can color cooked.

Because cooked pasta is edible safe both babies and toddlers can enjoy it, it is my go-to technique when setting up the class.

Notes

The vinegar helps the food coloring adhere to the spaghetti and keep the food coloring from dying the baby's hands when he/she plays.

The longer the pasta sits in the cold water, the more vibrant the colors will be.

Ingredients

  • Large plastic Bin
  • Food coloring
  • Vinegar
  • Cooked Spaghetti
  • Cooking oil

Instructions

  1. Cook the pasta according to the package directions but do not add the oil.
  2. While the pasta is cooking, fill several mixing bowls (one for each color) about 3/4 the way full with cold water.
  3. Add several drops of food coloring to the water.
  4. Add a few tablespoons of vinegar to each water bowl.
  5. When the pasta has finished cooking, carefully strain the water from it, and immediately distribute the cooked spaghetti among the bowls of colored water you have prepared.
  6. Let the pasta sit for about 1 hour.
  7. Drain each color individually and toss it with the tiniest bit of oil to keep the strands from sticking together.
  8. Add the pasta to your plastic bin and let the fun begin! You can even place your baby inside the bin to feel the pasta with his/her hands and feet.
  9. OPTIONAL: See the video to color the pasta without using water.

Integrate Rainbow COLORED PAsta Recipe in YOUR Sensory Play

We integrated the sensory play with this zoo book and then created our zoo using these Zoo animal figurines. The kids had a great time hiding the animals, practicing vocabulary, cutting the spaguetti with scissors and using tongs to transfer it to different cups.

The babies also had a great time with this Spaghetti Recipe For Sensory Play. Moms were excited to see their little ones eat, toss and explore these long colorful stripes.
